Art Relief offers free rural art workshops, creating art and mental wellness opportunities, with no financial impact to those suffering hardships caused by the current drought in farming communities. The important demand for Art/mental wellness programs in rural areas affected by drought has enabled an extension of Art Relief. Founded and coordinated in 2018 by Narelle Whitham, donating tuition and materials for art classes. Free workshops provide opportunities for people to participate in a fun, friendly, non-judgemental, art/wellness class. No Charge provides minimal financial impacts on day to day living. The aims were simple: • To provide fun creative art activities/tuition to inspire hope, and a sense of togetherness during times of hardship, as well as to provide the opportunity to learn art skills. • To provide social activities that give a sense of belonging to a group, help to reduce stress and anxiety and promote good mental wellness. • workshops to occur in a friendly, positive, nonjudgmental, non-racial, non-prejudiced or gender discrimination environment. • Expand Art Reliefs availability/ access for drought affected communities in the Murray River Council and other Regional Councils • workshops were flexible and included watercolour, acrylic and mixed mediums, offering varied techniques depending on availability of donated materials. • All Art Relief workshops are to have a person with a Mental Health First Aid Certificate present who can provide guidance.
